The Seoul Namsan Gugakdang, located within Namsan Hanok Village, is a theater dedicated to Korean traditional music performances and features the exterior design of a traditional Hanok. Although it is situated underground, the Sunken Garden allows for natural lighting and ventilation. The stage is designed in a thrust shape, blending the Western proscenium and arena formats, to create an ideal setting for performing traditional Korean music. The stage can be reconfigured to accommodate various performances, from classical music (proscenium structure) to Korean traditional music (thrust structure). By using a special type of wood that does not absorb sound for the interior finishing, the subtle echoes of the gayageum can be heard equally well from any seat in the audience.
